A Brief History of THE HUGUENOT SOCIETY OF ILLINOIS

(adapted for this website from the document authored by Richard J. DuBourdieu, © 1995)

The organization has its roots in medieval France. In 1685, Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes, signed on April 13, 1598, which had assured religious tolerance in France. This revocation marked the beginning of the emigration of those French Huguenots from whom our membership descends to numerous countries throughout Europe and North America.

The Huguenot Society of Illinois held its first meeting on November 29, 1955 at the Wedgewood Annex of Marshall Field's in Chicago. In the fall of 1957 the Illinois Society banner was unveiled for the first time. In this year of 2020 The Huguenot Society of Illinois celebrates its 65th Anniversary.

The Huguenot Society of Illinois is pleased to be able to award at least one $500 Annual Scholarship to a member of The Huguenot Society of Illinois attending an accredited college or university. This scholarship may be renewed for up to four years, and is not limited to undergraduate work.
